V. Things I Like

こんにちは！わたしはえいがとゲームとスポーツがすきです。

During the daytime I like to be outdoors, but at night, I absolutely love a movie or game night with family or friends. I grew up watching a lot of Disney movies, and I still really like them. I was actually just at Tokyo Disney last month, and went on the new Tangled ride since it’s one of my favorite movies! I also grew up on a lot of Nintendo games, and I play on my Switch whenever I have some free time. Lately, my sister got me into a few phone games so I’ve been playing a lot of those as well.

I also really like sports, both playing and watching them. I started playing volleyball when I was 7, but haven’t been able to do so as much since coming to college. However, I did start boxing in college and really enjoy that too. Naturally, I really like to watch volleyball as well, and used to keep up with a lot of collegiate teams and the US National Team. I was also a big college football fan, even before coming to ND, and I’m really going to miss being on campus during football season.

I decided to take Japanese in my last semester of college, because I grew up surrounded by Japanese culture, but have never formally learned the language. My hometown (Honolulu) is a huge melting pot of cultures, affecting the food, products, media, and entertainment I consume. Some of my close friends back home are fluent in both English and Japanese, so I heard it around me a lot while growing up. Due to my (relatively close) proximity to Japan, I also grew up vacationing there quite frequently and always had an amazing time. I hope to improve my Japanese language skills and be able to communicate with others the next time I visit!

II. Japanese-related Video Opinion

This week I started watching Alice in Borderland, a Japanese sci-fi thriller/dystopian TV show. I had heard about it when it first came out back when I was still in high school, but never had the urge to start watching it until recently. I'm typically not really a fan of sci-fi or thrillers, but I do like the plot and suspense of dystopians and mysteries so I was intrigued. I enjoyed the first episode and continued watching, although some heavy plot points were a bit much for me, so I couldn’t binge the show like I typically do with others.  Overall, two things stood out to me the most. First off, I found it really interesting to hear the difference in dialogue between people who are friends as opposed to strangers. Since this show is a thriller with a lot of emotional scenes, it was also pretty cool to hear the differences in the actors’ tone of voice. I plan to keep watching the show and am excited to find out how it all plays out!

VIII. Katakana

I noticed a lot of words written in katakana are words sounded out from other languages. We’ve covered a few examples in class, such as cafe, restaurant, and gym. By this logic, it makes sense that sound effects are also written in katakana. However, I was surprised to learn that animals are also written in katakana, and am curious to learn more about why this is the case. I am also wondering what role the kanji characters play in writing animals, and how the two are used differently.
