XIII. Semester Reflection

I’ve really enjoyed learning Japanese, and wish I could have taken more semesters of it here at ND. I remember being a little nervous to speak in class at the start of the semester, but have gotten much more comfortable doing so now. I had a lot of fun in class and am sad that we only have 2 more left. I love learning languages and plan to continue learning Japanese as a side hobby. Since I’ll be going to grad school in Asia, I plan on visiting Japan sometime within the next year. Hopefully I’ll be able to use less English the next time I’m there!

せんしゅうのどようびにくじにおきました。ピラティスをしました。それからあさごはんをつくりました。ごごいちじごろへやでしゅくだいをしました、でもにじはんパーティーにいきました。ともだちのうちでおさけをのみました。ビールはのみませんでしたがほかのおさけをのみました。ろくじごろともだちといっしょにコンサートにいきました。わたしはカントリーのおんがくをあまりききます、でもコンサートがだいすきです。コンサートのあとでともだちといっしょにえいがをみました。ごぜんにじはんごろねました。

XI. さくらまつり🌸

きのうとしょかんにいきました、でもしゅくだいをしませんでした。さくらまつりでうたいました。ダンスをみましたとおんがくをききました。それからにほんのおかしをたべました。 I thought the Sakura Matsuri was a really cute event. It was cool to put together a performance with the rest of the class and perform on stage, despite having only learned Japanese for a few months. I also really liked watching the other performances and seeing what ideas other students came up with. Overall, this event was a fun way to bring the whole department together and experience Japanese culture outside the classroom.

もくようびのよじ、シカゴにいきました。あねのうちでばんごはんをたべました。ばんごはんのあとで、もちをつくりました。それからゲームをしました。きんようびのあさもゲームをしました。きんようびとどようびにバレーボールをしました。どようびにレストランでばんごはんをたべました。ともだちとおすしをたべました。にちようびにMassにいきました。そしてレストランでフランスりょうりをたべました。げつようびにRiver Northでかいものにいきました。はちじにコンサットにいきました。コンサットでたくさんしゃしんをとりました。かようびのしちじごろノートルダームにかえりました。それからたくさんしゅくだいをしました。

VIII. Katakana

I noticed a lot of words written in katakana are words sounded out from other languages. We’ve covered a few examples in class, such as cafe, restaurant, and gym. By this logic, it makes sense that sound effects are also written in katakana. However, I was surprised to learn that animals are also written in katakana, and am curious to learn more about why this is the case. I am also wondering what role the kanji characters play in writing animals, and how the two are used differently.
